European Historical Combat Guild

Chapter Master Daniel Smith instructs guild members

The Guild was formed to bring students of historical combat together to train under a common set of principles. Members are trained to achieve a high level of proficiency with a range of weapons by paying close attention to the principles of combat.

The Guild was founded by John Waller. John’s distinguished career as a Combat Master and Fight Director, for such films as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Hawk the Slayer and in television for drama series such as Robin Hood and Pride and Prejudice, stood him in good stead as the Creative Director of the Royal Armouries. John retired from the museum in 2006, but continues to be consulted.

Since it’s official launch in 2001 the Guild has established many Chapters throughout Britain and Europe.

Going off half-cocked

Many older guns have a form of safety that prevents the gun from being fired when the hammer is pulled halfway back. Sometimes a fault develops which allows the gun to fire when the hammer is in the half-cocked position, before a proper aim can be taken.
